More Details
Similarities:
  • Both mills are solidly made.
  • Both use the impact method to grind grain.
  • Both grind the same types of things: grains, beans, rice, but not oily seeds such as peanuts or flax seed.
  • Both have fineness adjustments for grinding coarse to super-fine flour.
  • Both are enthusiastically recommended by users.

Capacity:

According to the manuals, the flour canister on the Nutrimill will hold 20 cups of flour at once. The WonderMill canister will hold 12-13 cups at once, so if you like grinding more than that at a time, you would stop, empty the canister, and then grind more.

Warranty:
Both companies have great customer service and solid warranties on manufacturer defects (not abuse or normal wear and tear). Both machines have a lifetime warranty on the milling heads. The WonderMill has a 6 year warranty on everything other than the milling heads, whereas the Nutrimill has a lifetime warranty on the entire mill. Also know that Grain of Truth Bread Company offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee on our mills, if you are unhappy for any reason.

Noise Level
Measurements say that the Nutrimill is 52 decibels and the WonderMill is a quieter 49. A friend of mine prefers the WonderMill for just this reason. However, I have tested them side by side and honestly, I can't hear a difference in volume. The mills have a slightly different pitch or tone, but in terms of annoyance level of the noise, I hear no difference.

Putting grain into the mill:
One strength of the Nutrimill is that you can load the grain into the hopper of the Nutrimill before turning it on. With the WonderMill, you turn the mill on first, and then add the grain. So, you can measure grain directly into the Nutrimill hopper, but with the WonderMill you have to measure into a bowl and then pour it into the running WonderMill. Also, you can not turn the WonderMill off in the middle of grinding, whereas you can do so with the Nutrimill. This is slight convenience issue but may be more of an issue if you have children using your mill who might forget and put the grain in the WonderMill before turning it on.

Size:
The Nutrimill measures 11" x 11.5" on the base (the footprint), and is 13" tall. The WonderMill has two pieces: the main mill is 8" in diameter and 11 3/4" high, and the detachable ground flour holder is 8" in diameter and 7 1/2" high. In the WonderMill picture above (with the jam and muffins) the WonderMill canister is positioned behind the mill, but when
in use it is attached to the right side of the mill by a snug tube.  If you plan to keep the flour canister attached to your mill when not in use, then the more narrow width of the Nutrimill (picture on left) means that it will take up less counter space. If you keep the WonderMill canister detached and in front or behind your mill, then the WonderMill will take up less right-to-left counter space.

Grinding Fine and Coarse Flour:
In side-by-side comparisons in my kitchen, grinding popcorn on the coarsest setting allowed, the Nutrimill yields a slightly more coarse result than the WonderMill. On the finest setting possible, making pastry flour from soft white wheat grain, the WonderMill grinds slightly more finely than the Nutrimill. I don't know if either of these differences are significant enough to affect baking properties. (I suspect not.) If you would like, I'd be happy to send you little samples of each so you can compare for yourself the coarse and fine textures of both mills. If you'd like some samples just send me your snail mail address by e-mail. (No charge.)

Certifications:
I don't believe there is a significant difference here. Independent product safety organizations test and certify appliances for complying with their safety standards. The WonderMill has been certified by UL (for the USA), CSA (Canada), and CE (Europe and UK). The Nutrimill is only certified by CSA but a recent agreement between CSA and UL means that both companies now accept each other's testing, so a CSA certification is equivalent to a UL certification (accepted in both USA and Canada). Dusting? Not really.
A comment on dusting issues. Some customers have asked about reviews they have seen of the Nutrimill mentioning the mill releasing messy bits of flour onto the counter or even the wall while it is grinding grain. A little history... there was a  period of time when Nutrimill tried replacing a rubber part of the mill base with plastic. Unfortunately, this plastic piece did not hold the flour canister in place as tightly as the old rubber design did, leading to some dusting issues during milling. As a result, Nutrimill has gone back to using the rubber piece to hold the canister in place more firmly. A recent Nutrimill I purchased did dust somewhat because it had the wrong base, and when I contacted the company, they immediately sent me the new base at no charge. It made a huge difference; after grinding 10 cups of grain I get less than 1/16 of a teaspoon of flour on the counter or inside the canister holding base. I'm very pleased with the cleanliness and ease of use.

In the WonderMill. the flour canister fits tightly to the mill with a snug plastic tube and there are
no dusting issues at all.
